Before You Let Sidekick or Canvas Edit Your Shopify Theme: A Black Friday Checklist

Shopify's AI can now redesign your store from a chat. Before you try it on the theme that pays your bills, make a copy, list your apps, and know what changes once a theme is edited in Canvas.

Shopify now lets you change your store by describing what you want. Ask Sidekick, its AI assistant, to make a button rounder or add a section, and it edits the theme for you. On October 1, 2026, Shopify went further with Canvas, a workspace where Sidekick edits your theme's code while you watch.

It's fast, and it's tempting to try right before the busiest weeks of the year. Black Friday is November 27. Here's what to do before you let AI touch the theme your sales run on.

Know which tool you're using

Two AI tools can change your theme, and they work differently.

  • Sidekick in the theme editor makes changes you describe, inside the editor you already know. Shopify added this in its Winter '26 Edition.
  • Canvas shows every page of your store in one workspace, and Sidekick edits the theme's files directly. It's in early access, desktop only, and works only with themes made by Shopify or custom themes, not with themes bought from other developers.

Canvas is the one to be most careful with, because of what happens to a theme afterward.

The checklist

  1. Download a copy of your theme first. In your admin, go to Online Store > Themes, open the menu next to your theme and download the theme file. Shopify says you can't download the files of a theme edited in Canvas, so do it before.
  2. Work on a duplicate, never your live theme. Duplicate the theme and open the copy in Canvas. Changes to a duplicate don't carry over to the original, and the original stays editable in the regular theme editor. If the experiment goes badly, your live store is untouched.
  3. Know what changes once a theme is edited in Canvas. That theme opens only in Canvas from then on, and it no longer receives theme updates. If you rely on updates from Shopify for fixes and new features, keep that in mind before you publish a Canvas-edited theme.
  4. List your app blocks and embeds. Reviews, upsells, pop-ups, subscriptions and tracking often live in app blocks or app embeds. Canvas can't add or set these up, so write down what's on each page now and check that each one still works in the edited copy.
  5. Read each change before you approve it. Sidekick asks you to approve its changes. Take the time to see what it changed and where, especially on product pages, the cart and checkout links.
  6. Check the copy like a customer would. Before you publish:
    • Use it on your phone, where many holiday shoppers will be.
    • Go from a product to checkout and make sure every step works.
    • Test the speed. Our free website audit gives you a quick read.
    • Check that it works with a keyboard and that text is easy to read. Our accessibility check flags the common problems.
    • Make sure page titles and headings still make sense, so search engines and AI tools can read them.
    • Confirm your analytics and ad tracking still record sales.
  7. Pick a date to stop changing things. Decide on a cutoff, ideally a week or more before Black Friday, after which the theme stays as it is until the rush is over. A stable store beats a new look that breaks on the busiest day.
  8. Swap themes carefully. If you're ready to publish an edited theme, consider scheduling the switch for a quiet time and keeping your previous theme ready to switch back.

While you're in the admin: AI shopping channels

Shopify can now show your products inside AI assistants. Under Sales channels > Agentic, you choose which ones you sell on, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

The Fall '26 Edition added a knowledge base on that same page. It holds the facts AI assistants can give shoppers about your store, such as return windows and shipping destinations. Shopify drafts them, and agents only get the facts you publish, so check them before the holidays.
